Can Jalpí
Sant Joan Street (N-II Road, km 671)
Also known as "Mas Coll" or "Can Gualba", the "Mas
Jalpí" (or Gelpí) is an ancient farmhouse acquired
in the seventies by the Pineda de Mar City Council. It has been restored
and rehabilitated with the aim of using it for social and cultural activities.
In records as from the XIV century, the farmhouse was owned by the Coll
family, who obtained from the Cabrera Viscounts the notary with exclusive
rights over the whole Montpalau territory, a concession that lasted until
the beginning of the XVIII century. During the cruel Turkish pirates
attack to Pineda in 1545, the notary Jaume-Joan Coll was apprehended
and later set free. As a result of this event, en 1561 a defence tower
was built attached to the house. During the XVII century the Coll family
became related with the Gualbes family, which was part of the Barcelona
bourgeoisie, and during the following century with the Jalpí family,
from Arenys de Munt. In 1925, August of Borràs-Jalpí sold
the property to the Feliu family from Arenys de Mar.
As for the farmhouse, it's a rectangular building, with the façade
parallel to the road. It has a higher section in its left side that belongs
to the ancient defence tower. The roof has two slopes, with the ridge
parallel to the main façade. It has a round-headed portal with
wedge-shaped stones (voussoir), and a little coat of arms above. The
windows of the left side feature lintel, sill and stone jambs, while
those on the right have stuccoed arris. The perpendicular section attached
to the façade features two large windows with gothic decoration.
