Boundary cross of Can Quintana
Major Street, 62
The boundary crosses are monumental stone crosses located near the roadswith the objective of establishing territorial boundaries and at the same time to exert some kind of spiritual protection. Generally, they consist of a small column (shaft) raising from a stepped base and crowned with a capital which holds a carved stone cross.
In Pineda there are two boundary crosses, but only one of them retains the original base and the shaft.
The
boundary cross located in the "Can Quintana" patio, in the
Carrer Major, was preserved almost entirely thanks to the Quintana family,
that took the precaution of hiding it and restore it once the civil war
was over. It's a gothic piece of the XIV century, quite remarkable. In
one side there is the carved image of Holy Christ, and in the other,
the Virgin with the Child, as well as several saints on the edges of
the cross and in the capital.
The other cross was located behind the church, and it featured four
petals or tears in the most pure Flemish gothic style. It was damaged
during the Carlist war and completely destroyed in 1936. Nowadays, is
located in front of the church and we can only see its baseand a part
of its original shaft, crowned by a simple wrought iron cross.
