Buildings of the XIX and XX centuries
During the second half of the XIX century and the first decades of the XX, Pineda is still a small town with barely 2.000 inhabitants, and mostly structured along Major, Ciutadans and Sant Antoni streets, with some cross lanes such as Tribala and Carrer de Mar (Sea Street), that little by little, progress towards the sea, until they link up with the small group of houses near the beach.
The urban outlook changed little during the XVII and XVIII centuries. Is only as from the last third of the XVIII century that some old houses of the ancient town centre are replaced by new buildings with a
ground floor and two upper levels, distinguished by symmetric façades, with balconies and windows of straight lines and unambiguous decorative austerity.
We can find examples of this type of buildings in number 3 of Ciutadans Street (dated 1776) or in numbers 35 and 57 of Major Street .
A similar arrangement scheme can bee seen too in "Can Gelabert" (11,
Major Street), with a stuccoed façade resembling coursed ashlars, straight mouldings in the gaps and crowned with balustrade, with a central section stating the year 1910.
Furthermore, it's in the area of the first urban expansion where we can admire the most prominent examples of the architecture that emerged in those years. The great mansion known as "Cal Coronel" (Colonel's House) is from the first decade of the XX century, in NR. 3 of Girona Street , of classical lines and grand appearance, featuring terra cotta in the ornaments and on the balusters of the balcony and the terrace.
The Carrer de Mar (Sea street) has several buildings from “estiuejants” (upper middle class people from the city who stayed in Pineda most of the summer) among which stands out "Cal Comandant" (Commander's House) (NR. 46), the residence of the Dominic nuns, and also "Can Ribera" (NR. 50), built in 1925 y 1922, respectively.
In NR. 3 of Balmes Street , Dr. Bertomeu's house is an interesting mansion of modernist inspiration that combines rendering with a brick facia, and in the Consulat del Mar Street, NR. 3-5, we find "Can Basart", a grand and stately building with tower, dating from the twenties and thirties, distinguished by its curved crowning and a portal decorated in classical style.
Special mention is due to two buildings designed by architect Isidre Puig i Boada.
One of them is the present "Ajuntament" (Council House), built in between 1914 and 1917 to replace the older, dating from the XVIII century, which at one time had also been a hostel. The other is house NR. 22 in Carrer del Mar ( Sea Street ), built in 1952, characterized by its carved reliefs of floral elements. Puig i Boada, born in Barcelona in 1891, was the developer of the general planning and aligning of squares and streets of Pineda in 1922, and always remained very closely bound to the town.
