Parish Church of Santa María de Pineda
Antoni Doltra Street - Esglèsia Street - Sant Joan Street
The first record mentioning the parish church of Santa Maria de Pineda
de Mar is in the consecration act effected by the Bishop of Girona, Berenguer
Guifré, in 1079. In 1246 it became dependent of the Sant Salvador
de Breda monastery and had the suffraganship of the Sant Pere de Riu
parish.
During the first half of the XVI century, a new temple, fortified after
the terrible plundering of the pirate Dragut in 1545, replaced the ancient
Romanesque church. According to the preserved contracts and receipts,
we know that the sacristy was commissioned in 1514 to Miguel de la Gaspi;
the arch supporting the choir, a chapel and a sepulchre were the work
of construction foremanNicolau Bastart in 1526; and the fortification
works were appointed to Jean de Tours in 1545 and lasted well into 1553.
That same year Bernat Vidal was commissioned to build the chapel under
the old bell tower and in 1567, the construction of the chapel of Sant
Joan Baptista (St. John the Baptist) was assigned to Pere Garriga. Gabriel
Bou, from Girona had painted the main altarpiece, in between 1504 and
1509, although Josep Sayós, from Barcelona, carried out the woodwork
more than a century later. From the gothic work stand out the bosses
of the vault ribs carved with images of the Virgin and several Saints,
as well as a carved inscription in the lintel of the main portal describing
the events of 1545.
In
the XVIII century, two lateral naves were added to the central one
and also the octagonal bell tower. Dated also at the same time is the
baroque façade, which was probably decorated with serigraphs
at the end of the century. The temple was burned down in 1936.
The present sgraffitothat characterizes the façade was undertaken in 1948 according to the design of architect Isidre Puig i Boada, based in geometric and baroque elements. It was restored in 1988 using the original moulds. In the inside stands out the dome of the chapel of the Holy Sacrament, decorated by Josep Perpiñà, three rose windows with leaded stained glass, workmanshipof Domènec Fita, and an image of the Piety carved by Frederic Marès.
